What do the Czech Republic and Poland have in common? Both countries were, besides other things, part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Petr Vlček, a programmer of our Polish section, and Iwona Łykova from NFA will examined the ways how these countries viewed the period through the lenses of their national cinematographies.

While Petr Vlček outlined the two central themes within the Czech production and commented on the extracts from Imperial and Royal Field Marshal (1930), The Good Slodier Schweik (1956) and Jára Cimrman Lying, Sleeping (1983), Łykova explained the political aspects of the partition of Poland in Wajda’s Wedding (1973) and introduced the Polish variation on Schweik – The Deserters (1986).
